It’s been confirmed Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne) will leave Coronation Street to enjoy sun, sea and most importantly, a completely different life as part of a boating job with his friend.
Last week, Carla was forced to come to terms with the fact Peter didn’t want to continue his life in Weatherfield.
The revelation came on the same day Carla was struggling to find a Christmas present for her partner. After the news, Carla printed off something while at Underworld, which we now know is a one-way plane ticket to Spain.
Christmas Day in Coronation Street was largely focused on the Weatherfield residents reflecting on the year they’ve had. The instalment opened with a reminder Coronation Street is best when it pairs comedy right next to an emotive storyline like Peter’s departure, as a handful of people dashed into Dev’s (Jimmi Harkishin) shop only to be shouted at by Evelyn (Maureen Lipman), who had snuck in for a few bits.

When focus turned to gift giving for the families, Carla wanted a quiet moment to hand Peter his.
With the Barlow house empty, bar the exception of a sleeping Ken (William Roache) and Bertie, Carla and Peter headed into the yard.

There, Carla gave Peter his plane ticket to join his friend abroad. He was thrilled but a little confused as well, as Peter wondered where Carla’s was.
Carla gently told Peter that she wouldn’t be coming on his adventure, as she’s realised they won’t explore the next chapter of their lives together.

In tomorrow’s episode, focus will be on Carla and Peter looking back at their life in Weatherfield.
Peter will then gather his things, say goodbye to his loved ones and prepare to leave the cobbles behind.

‘We’re filming solidly together for two days’, Alison King teased.
‘There was a lot to learn. But aside from that it was amazing, but it was so emotional, I did not need any tearstick for those scenes. There was no way of knowing what would happen because every time we did it I literally filled up with emotion and started crying at different times in every scene.

‘Even though it doesn’t go into specific details of all their past, it shows what they’re like, as a couple. It was really nice to have that much time on them because people seem to enjoy them just having a conversation. It was something to get our teeth into with all the emotions and it was a real journey. It was really, really lovely to do those scenes.’
