Coronation Street spoilers: Breakthrough for Paul as equipment replicates his voice

Paul Foreman (Peter Ash) continues to prepare for the final period of his life in Coronation Street, when his motor neurone disease will leave him unable to do the simplest of things – including talking.

Recently, Paul had a meeting with an assessor about his Personal Independence Payment. The money Paul receives within this benefit will give him the chance to buy equipment that will help him with feeling comfortable each day.

In tomorrow’s episode of the ITV soap, Paul heads to a meeting with his speech therapist and opens up about the coughing fits he’s started having.

Joining Paul for the meeting is Bernie (Jane Hazlegrove), who realises they need to see the MND nurse.

Once Billy (Daniel Brocklebank) arrives, the family listen as the nurse explains she’ll fill out a form that’ll fast-track Paul’s benefits.

But once Paul realises it’s an SR1 application, he breaks the news to Bernie and Billy that an SR1 is for someone who is terminally ill and not expected to live more than 12 months.

The nurse then confirms that Paul only has around 6-12 months left to live.

Next week, Paul and Billy are once again in a meeting with the speech therapist. They reveal they would like to use Paul’s real voice to recreate his replacement one, another upsetting moment as Paul accepts he will reach a point soon where he won’t be able to speak.

With the festive season approaching, Iain MacLeod recently hinted at some more emotional scenes for Paul and his family.

‘We’re always very keen to keep that family busy so that the medical story is always going on but like we all have to do when we’re ill, contend with catastrophes that are nothing to do with the illness at all’, he explained.

‘This Xmas the catastrophe arises from Bernie and her historical involvement with Shelly’s slightly dubious online scamming and it puts her in a massive amount of legal hot water, to the extent that there’s every likelihood that she’s not going to be present for what will be Paul’s last Christmas and that the family might not get to be together for one last festive moment’, Iain said.

‘There’s also a really fascinating exploration of their history – that family was scattered before the winds for a lot of the twins’ childhood. It wasn’t an easy time, they didn’t have much money, there was Paul’s historically abusive stepfather.
