The relationship between Paul Foreman (Peter Ash) and Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank) in Coronation Street is one of genuine love and closeness. Paul’s diagnosis of MND has focused their minds on their priorities and they’re determined to make the most of whatever time they have left together.
Paul was recently given the devastating news that this time could be very short, as he probably only has 6 to 12 months to live.
‘Their time together is finite and of course they don’t know when that is going to be. They just make the best of it,’ Daniel Brocklebank told us.
‘Paul’s debilitation is changing all the time and getting worse all the time. So Billy is obviously not just trying to be there for him and help him with the physical depletions, it’s also the emotional changes and everything else that comes with that. So I think actually they just kind of hunker down and get on with it.’

Meanwhile Paul’s mum Bernie (Jane Hazlegrove) probably isn’t going to be around for very long either, but in her case it’s because she’s most likely heading for prison after the police arrested her for handling stolen goods.

Bernie’s solicitor Joel (Calum Lill) told her that a custodial sentence is the most likely outcome and she needs to prepare herself for that, leaving Bernie devastated that this would mean she would miss Paul’s last Christmas.

The family decided to do something about that, and Paul, Gemma (Dolly-Rose Campbell) and Joseph (William Flanagan) invited Bernie to an early Christmas dinner the day before her sentencing.
Obviously this is going to be a hugely emotional occasion as the family will be gathering to celebrate ‘Christmas’ together probably for the last time.

Billy knows it’s going to be especially hard for Paul, and in a lovely gesture he buys Paul and himself Christmas jumpers so they can try to get into the festive mood for the Christmas lunch.
Paul is hugely touched, and the couple set off for Gemma’s – but it’s not long before Christmas lunch takes a worrying twist.
