Come Dine With Me has topped a Netflix poll – but it’s not good news.

Shocking results show the reality competition, a true staple of British culture that has served us plenty of iconic tantrums, has the biggest carbon footprint of the streaming service.

Recent seasons of the Channel 4 programme, which first aired in 2005, are available to watch including spin-offs Couples Come Dine With Me and Come Dine Champion of Champions – but watching them comes at a cost.

According to new research, Come Dine With Me would need to plant 39 trees to offset emissions, after totalling 25.73 kilos of carbon dioxide emissions and requiring 86kWh of electricity usage.

The team at Spin Genie UK have analysed the total runtime of the show and several other popular TV series available on Netflix UK, and multiplied by the average carbon dioxide emissions of an hour spent streaming TV.

That leaves Come Dine With Me in the top spot, so fans would have to plant 39 trees over the next ten years to offset their carbon emissions, if they binged all 715 hours across 19 seasons.

Four shows come in second place, with The Big Bang Theory, Below Deck, Gilmore Girls and The Vampire Diaries all requiring six trees to be planted to offset their emissions.

Orange is the New Black is in third place, with five trees, and Friends, Gossip Girl, The Office and Homeland all score fourth place, with four trees.

Meanwhile, the likes of Breaking Bad, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Crown are also guilty, with three trees needed to be planted.

It’s good news for crime fanatics, as the study also showed the genre has a lower carbon footprint than romance, reality, game shows and cooking, which stands in the top spot with a whopping 25.73kg of average carbon dioxide emissions.

Despite topping the poll, Come Dine With Me – and all its drama – has proven time and time again to be a cult favourite, including with Gossip Girl star Penn Badgley.

The You actor was introduced to ‘What a sad little life, Jane’, and truly delivered.

Despite being baffled at the whole situation, Penn delivered Come Dine With Me 2016 contestant Peter’s notorious monologue, before asking: ‘Is this scripted?’

He then couldn’t hold back the giggles watching the real version, adding: ‘I so much prefer your reality television’.

Come Dine With Me airs on Channel 4 and is available to watch on Netflix.
