CO2 shortage: UK ‘has 10 days’ to fix crisis before chicken, pork and baked goods start to disappear in shops
The i says the UK has “about 10 days” before supplies of chicken, pork and baked goods start to run out as supply chains grapple with the current CO2 shortage, industry figures have warned.
The poultry industry has said producers will be forced to take emergency measures to conserve CO2 supplies over the next few days as plants hold only one to five days’ carbon dioxide supply.
Carbon dioxide is used to stun animals for slaughter and in the food packaging process. It is also used in fizzy drinks, beer, cheese, fruit and vegetables and crumpets, among other items.
