This Christmas could be the hottest on record, the Met Office has said, as temperatures could reach 15C.

Mild temperatures will be seen across most of the UK, as this Christmas will be one of the warmest since 1920, when temperatures reached 15.6C.

The UK will not have a white Christmas this year – only the Scottish mountains will see a scattering of snow.

But as Storm Pia leaves the UK, yellow warnings for wind and rain have been issued in north England, Scotland and north Wales.

Meteorologist Liam Eslick said: ‘People should make sure to leave more time, especially in exposed areas, it could affect rail networks and ferries.

‘People travelling on roads should take care and stay away from high-sided vehicles and, for people who are at home and are going for walks, stay away from coasts.’

If you’re looking to go on a walk this Christmas, Boxing Day will be the best day to venture outside, Mr Eslick said.

He added: ‘It’s looking like a damp picture across the UK, heavy rain possibly in Wales, past Christmas lunch there could be some breaks if people are looking to go out and about.

‘Boxing Day is probably going to be the best day if people are looking to go for a walk.’
