China says Philippines ignored South China Sea deal as tensions rise
In a recent development regarding the ongoing South China Sea dispute, China has accused the Philippines of ignoring proposals aimed at managing the conflict. According to an unnamed senior Chinese official speaking to the Manila Times, the proposals were “met with inaction by the Marcos administration”.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr responded by saying that while they did not outright reject the proposals, they questioned the premise upon which they were based.
The South China Sea remains a focal point of contention involving China, the Philippines, and several other nations. Tensions between Manila and Beijing have surged in recent months, with a particular focus on Second Thomas Shoal, where the Philippines have deliberately grounded a ship – Sierra Madre – to bolster its territorial claim.
Routine missions to resupply a small contingent of Filipino soldiers stationed on the Sierra Madre have led to confrontations between the Philippine Coast Guard and their Chinese counterparts, further exacerbating the already tense situation in the region.
