China plane crash: charred belongings found
Burnt wreckage and charred personal belongings have been found at the site of the plane crash in southern China, according to rescuers at the site.
The flight was carrying 132 people when it crashed into hills in Guangxi. The cause of the China Eastern flight MU5735 crash is being investigated and recovery has been slow due to the difficult terrain.
Families on those on board are still waiting for news and although the search for survivors continues, there is yet to be any reports of anyone being found alive. Neither local media nor the authorities have reported finding human remains.
There are hundreds of responders at the crash site in Wuzhou desperately looking at the steep slopes where debris from the crash is strewn. So far, parts of the plane’s wreckage have been found – broadcasters have shown images of charred remains of letters, bags, wallets and identity cards belonging to the plane’s passengers.
China Eastern has grounded all its Boeing 737-800s and set up a hotline for people seeking information on those on board.
Local reports
The passengers and crew members have yet to be identified through some relatives have spoken to local media or expressed their grief on social media.
One woman reported the loss of her newly-wed husband, there was reportedly a group of six people – one a teenager – who were on their way to Guangzhou to attend a funeral, according to a newspaper.
Another woman said her sister and close friends were part of that group whilst Reuters quoted a man at the airport who said he was the colleague of a passenger named Mr Tan.
After confirming that Mr Tan was on board, he had to break the news to Mr Tan’s family. “They were sobbing. His mother couldn’t believe this had happened,” he told the news agency. “Her boy was only 29 years old.”
He said that arrangements were being made by the airline to bring the families to the crash site.
