ChatGPT to lose voice over Scarlett Johansson similarity

OpenAI announced it will remove the “Sky” voice option from ChatGPT after users noted its similarity to Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson. This observation arose when OpenAI showcased new features of its model, including the voice option that reads responses aloud.

The chatbot’s “Sky” voice, described as flirty and conversational, drew parallels to the 2013 film “Her,” where Johansson voices an operating system that becomes the object of affection for Joaquin Phoenix’s character.

    • 12 months ago ChatGPT became a thing – but just how scared of AI should we be?

OpenAI clarified that the voices in ChatGPT’s voice mode were chosen through an extensive five-month process involving professional voice actors, talent agencies, casting directors, and industry advisors.

The film “Her,” directed by Spike Jonze, explores themes of love and intimacy rather than technology, despite its futuristic setting.

In November, Johansson reportedly pursued legal action against an AI app that used her likeness without permission in an advertisement.

OpenAI emphasised that the “Sky” voice is not meant to imitate the actress, stating, “We believe that AI voices should not deliberately mimic a celebrity’s distinctive voice.” The company is working to pause the “Sky” voice while addressing concerns about its selection process, as noted in a blog post and on X, formerly known as Twitter.
