Genta Koja has won the Okinawa gubernatorial election, defeating two-term incumbent Denny Tamaki with 59 per cent of the vote. Backed by Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, Koja’s election may shift the region’s stance on US military bases, ending a decade of opposition.
