A rare snowstorm has swept through the southern U.S., bringing snow and freezing rain to areas unaccustomed to winter weather. Four deaths have been linked to the cold so far: two in Austin, Texas, and two from hypothermia in Georgia and Milwaukee.

Elsewhere, fog patches gradually lifting allowing some bright or sunny spells to develop, especially across Scotland and Northern Ireland. Temperatures near or slightly below average. Clear spells and a patchy frost developing across the north.

A band of rain across western Scotland will clear into northern England and northwest Wales throughout today. Rather cloudy to the south of this, although perhaps a few breaks developing. To the north a mix of bright spells and showers. Tonight: The band of patchy rain will stall across the central swathe of the UK overnight. Otherwise a mix of cloud and clear spells, with some fog patches developing.

A mostly cloudy day, with a risk of drizzle and snow grains in the south where cloud is thick enough. Some brighter spells possible in in the north and west, although patchy rain in the far west later. Chilly. Tonight: Cloudy for most with patchy rain across western Scotland and Northern Ireland easing by dawn. Turning chilly with some mist and fog, especially under any clear spells.

Largely dry but often cloudy across England and Wales but feeling chilly. Tonight: Further rain and brisk winds across northern Scotland, though clearing during the early hours. After nine gruelling days of battling two massive wildfires in Los Angeles, firefighters finally caught a break on Thursday as fierce winds weakened, providing much-needed relief.
