Developer Thomas Worrall has received retrospective approval from Bath and North East Somerset Council for his seven-bedroom ‘mega mansion’ in a protected area, which was built significantly larger and taller than originally permitted. Local residents claimed over 100 objections, citing planning breaches.
A significant fire broke out in a flat on Seven Sisters Road, Finsbury Park, on Bonfire Night, prompting the attendance of ten fire engines and 70 firefighters. One man jumped from a second floor and was hospitalised with minor injuries. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Andrew Gardiner, 59, was killed after being struck by a car while walking home in Folkestone on Sunday. Known as the town’s ‘best-known postie’, he was pronounced dead at the scene. A 49-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving.

Tuesday’s front pages mostly cover the findings from the inquiry into the contaminated blood scandal – the biggest treatment disaster in NHS history. The inquiry, chaired by Sir Brian Langstaff, is the largest public inquiry ever carried out in the UK. More than 30,000 people were infected with HIV and hepatitis C from 1970 to 1991 by contaminated blood products and transfusions. Yesterday, in the Commons, the prime minister – and leaders of the opposition – apologised. The PM promised comprehensive compensation for the victims of the blood scandal.
Elsewhere, the ICC’s decision to issue arrest warrants for Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu also features on many of the front pages. Israel and the US have widely rejected the move. The ICC has suggested war crimes and crimes against humanity – including using starvation of civilians as a method of warfare.
