Testing in Thornton-Cleveleys, Lancashire, revealed that nearly 70% of 49 residents had elevated levels of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a substance banned for its carcinogenic properties. One individual recorded over 400ng/ml, the highest level in the UK to date, raising health concerns linked to a nearby AGC Chemicals Europe factory.
Yvonne Ford, 59, died from rabies following a minor scratch from a stray puppy during a holiday in Morocco. Initially dismissed as insignificant, the scratch prompted no medical consultation.
