POLAND COURT CRISIS
Riot police were deployed to the constitutional court overnight after a judge’s suspension sparked protests. Key political figures continue to weigh in on the escalating turmoil.
What’s happening?
The Justice Department has issued subpoenas to California election officials as part of an investigation related to the upcoming elections. This inquiry focuses on various election practices and their compliance with federal regulations, raising questions about the integrity of the electoral process.
In comparing headlines, CNN states, “Judge imposes sweeping emergency order halting DOJ pressure campaign on election officials across the country,” while the AP reports, “Appeals court rejects Justice Department request for California to set aside disputed ballots.” CNN emphasizes the judicial response to a perceived overreach by the DOJ, framing the situation as an active conflict between the judiciary and executive branches. Conversely, the AP highlights the specifics of the appeals court’s decision regarding California, focusing on the legal process and its implications for ballot handling. This shows differing priorities: conflict dynamics versus formal judicial decisions affecting election processes.

His luck has run out (Picture: Derbyshire RPU/SWNS)
A pensioner’s luck has finally run out as his car was stopped and it was discovered he’d been driving without a licence for 50 years.
Officers from the Derbyshire Police road policing unit pulled the car over for several offences in Derby on Saturday, May 6.
They then discovered the 69-year-old driver had never passed his test or possessed a driving licence, meaning he had been driving illegally for five decades.
He’d been tricking car insurance companies into thinking he had a licence the entire time – and had apparently been bragging about his long-running scam, which led to his downfall.
A statement from the unit shared on Twitter said: ‘The driver of this vehicle has never passed a test despite being 69 years old and having been driving for over 50 years.
‘He has systematically provided details to insurance companies indicating that he had a licence but the flaw in his dastardly plan was bragging.
‘His long reign came to an abrupt end once we found out. Vehicle seized and driver reported for numerous offences.’
Paul Farley, of the Motor Insurers’ Bureau, commented: ‘Finally, brought a totally unacceptable reign to an end.
‘The bit he was missing was had he been involved in a collision and we paid out on a claim, we would’ve come back to him for the total cost of that claim.’

The statement has drawn mixed reactions, with some questioning how the driver managed to get away with it for 50 years.
Steve said: ‘It’s not a good look for the system, he’s managed to carry out his entire life without being caught before, even in todays ANPR world he’s evaded the system for years. Sadly, this one may encourage other chancers as odds of being caught are low.’
In contrast, Joe said: ‘Probably a far better driver than many road users, he’s avoided the police for 50 years… the UK would benefit from having more drivers like this on the road!’

A big summer awaits in Kane’s career (Picture: Marc Atkins/Getty Images)
Harry Kane’s future is set to be a huge talking point when this summer’s transfer window swings open in June.
The 29 year-old is approaching the end of his contract with Tottenham and he is yet to win a trophy in north London having come through the club’s academy.
Kane, who this season became the highest goalscorer in Tottenham’s history, has attracted interest from some of the biggest clubs in Europe – including Premier League rivals Manchester United.
But when exactly does Kane’s contract expire with Tottenham?
When does Harry Kane’s contract expire?
Kane’s contract with Tottenham will expire in the summer of 2024.
The England striker signed his current six-year deal back in 2018 worth up to £200,000 a week including bonuses.

Kane signed the contract after helping Spurs finish third, second and third in the previous three seasons.
An appearance in the Champions League final followed a year later, but since then Tottenham’s performances and results have declined.
Since reaching the final against Liverpool in Madrid, the highest the club have finished in the Premier League is fourth.
Spurs have also failed to progress past the fifth round of the FA Cup in that time and they were also beaten by Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final in 2021.
And so with Kane entering the final 12 months of his contract, this means that Daniel Levy will have a big decision to make this summer.
The Tottenham chairman could decide to sell Kane this year to guarantee a transfer fee for the club.
However, Levy could elect to keep his star man for next season in the hope of eventually persuading him to sign a new contract – but this would risk Kane walking away from the club as a free agent in 2024.

Will Harry Kane sign a new contract with Tottenham?
According to The Telegraph, the growing expectation is that Kane will not sign a new contract with Tottenham.
Kane’s advisors have not commented on his situation, but sources within the club are said to believe there is little hope he will extend his stay.
Manchester United are thought to be laying the groundwork ahead of a potential bid this summer, with Tottenham set to demand at least £100 million to part company with him.
Bayern Munich also have an interest in acquiring Kane’s services, but The Telegraph state he is keen to stay in England and break Alan Shearer’s all-time Premier League goalscoring record.
