Jacob’s struggling (Picture: BBC)
After the tragic death of Robyn Miller (Amanda Henderson) in last week (March 18)’s Casualty, we also very quickly said goodbye to her fellow nurses David Hide (Jason Durr) and Marty Kirkby (Shaheen Jafargholi), who resigned from their jobs in protest at the way cutbacks to the service had directly led to their friend’s death and put patients at risk.
Casualty stalwart Charlie (Derek Thompson) also resigned, but after a beyond-the-grave pep talk from Robyn he changed his mind and came back in to work.
In Saturday (March 25)’s visit to the ED, Jacob (Charles Venn) was reflecting on the part that he played in last week’s incidents. He’d been the one in charge who’d asked Robyn to stay on late after her last ever shift, he’d been the one who’d closed the department to new patients, so he’d also been the cause of there being no ambulances to go to Robyn’s aid because all the ambulances were full with patients who couldn’t be moved into the building.
It was little wonder that he was having a hard time, and being given the cold-shoulder by many of his colleagues certainly didn’t help. His story was destined to go one of two ways. Either some brilliant work with a patient would make him realise his value to the NHS and that events last week weren’t his fault…or not.
Last week, Jacob made huge decisions and many argued if he hadn’t made them, Robyn would still be alive (Picture: BBC)
When patient Clark (Jude Akuwudike), who claimed to be able to speak to people from beyond the grave, told Jacob he had a message for him, it seemed like there could be another pep talk from Robyn incoming, and an initially very sceptical Jacob seemed to think that was a possibility. But Clark said his message was from Omo – Jacob’s mother who died in 2019.
Soon after this we saw Jacob writing a resignation letter, saying that his position was ‘untenable’ as, to his team, ‘I am the face of this system.’ Without speaking to anybody else, he left.
Is that the last we’re going to see of Jacob Masters?
Elsewhere Dylan (William Beck) had a fight on his hands both to save to the life of DCI Vadra (Sheena Bhattessa), the police officer who’s been trying to solve the case of care home abuse that Dylan uncovered, and then to save the life of the man who attacked her and was also responsible for horrific rapes and abuse in the care homes, Roy Welch (Michael Begley).
Welch had become impaled on a metal spike while he was trying to run from police, and his chances of survival were slim, but Dylan was determined to keep him alive to face justice for the horrors he’d put so many elderly people through.
This brought him once again into conflict with his old rival Max (Nigel Harman), who changed his mind about Dylan being the right man for the clinical lead job as a result.
And when some drugs went missing the finger of blame was pointed at a distracted Jacob, but we later saw Faith (Kirsty Mitchell) taking the drugs in a manner that suggested that it wasn’t her first time.
Is Faith a drug addict? How long has this been going on? And how bad will things get for her?
