Cassie causes more trouble (Picture: ITV)
Dog-lover Evelyn Plummer (Maureen Lipman) is about to get herself in a whole heap of trouble in upcoming Coronation Street episodes when she takes on a man who is running an illegal puppy farm – but it’s daughter Cassie (Claire Sweeney) who makes the whole situation worse.
Maureen Lipman told us how Evelyn becomes involved.
‘She is at the precinct and she sees this dodgy looking chap with a van and he’s shouting at the dog, clearly the dog is frightened,’ she told Metro.co.uk.
‘She is never one to stand by and let someone get away with something she perceives as injustice, and of course she is a dog lover so she is determined to rescue the dog.’

Evelyn ‘liberates’ the dog and takes it home, trying to persuade Tyrone (Alan Halsall) that they should have a dog. Then she sets about going after the dog’s owner.
‘She wants to track him down,‘ Maureen continued. ‘People keep saying, you can’t just go in and say to the police, “He’s got an illegal puppy farm” because you need proper evidence so she borrows a camcorder and she’s in the charity shop when she spots him. She follows him. He knows she’s following him, and he turns on her.’

The actress explained that the situation quickly gets scary for Evelyn.
‘He threatens Evelyn twice and he is pretty dangerous and thuggish. Evelyn’s obviously scared to her boots but she’s not admitting that. But when he threatens to hurt Tyrone if she continues it is a real dilemma as she is so fond of Tyrone. She realises she has to take a step back to protect her family.’

Evelyn’s daughter Cassie unwittingly makes the situation worse after she takes the animal for a walk. Evelyn is horrified, knowing that if the dog’s owner should see them there could be nasty consequences. She bundles them back into the house but it’s too late – the dog owner, Terry, has spotted them.
He tracks down Evelyn to the shop, and puts up the Closed sign, locking the door. He threatens Evelyn, demanding to know where his dog is.

Dev (Jimmi Harkishin) comes back to find the shop locked, so he grabs Gary Windass (Mikey North) to help him break the door open.
Maureen told us that this isn’t the end of the story, as Cassie makes the situation much, much worse.

‘Cassie is a chip off the old block but to some degree an extended version of Evelyn and she goes too far and that endangers Evelyn’s life and gets her into more trouble,’ she sighed.
‘Blood is thicker than water in Coronation Street but they do fall out over this, even though they are in it together, simply because she goes farther than Evelyn would have done.’
