Onimusha: Warlords – there was a remaster back in 2019 (Picture: Capcom)
As Resident Evil and Street Fighter flourish, Capcom has said sequels to more obscure franchises could happen, including Sengoku Basara.
Between Resident Evil 4 and Street Fighter 6, Capcom is having quite the year so far, in fact they’ve been doing very well for a while now, in terms of both critical and commerical success.
Their showcase during the not-E3 period was a bit disappointing though, as they didn’t announce any major new games, but they have previously hinted they’re looking for ways to reinvigorate older franchises.
At a recent Q&A an investor asked them a very pointed question about Monster Hunter, Toraware No Palm, Sengoku Basara, and Onimusha, and the answer was quite promising.
The answer was also rather short, with an exec merely replying: ‘We are carrying out discussions regarding the future expansion of these titles so they can be enjoyed by a wide audience.’
The problem with that is that it’s not clear if the comment applies to all or just some of the titles mentioned.
You’ll notice one of those games is not like the others, as it’s super obvious Monster Hunter will be getting a new game in the not-too-distant future and the others are, by comparison, much more obscure.
(Like Nintendo, Capcom investors are often fans, and this was almost certainly just games they happened to like.)
Sengoku Basara was a mildly successful Dynasty Warriors style game from the PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360 era, while Toraware No Palm is a Japanese-only visual novel from 2019.
Onimusha is a good few rungs above both in terms of popularity and there have been mutterings of a revamp before, in fact many assumed the recently unveiled Kunitsu-Gami: Path Of The Goddess was related but (much like Exporimal has nothing to do with Dino Crisis) apparently they’re not.
You can read all the Q&A questions here but they’re all similarly brief, with one about remakes of non-numbered Resident Evil games getting the same stock answer as above.
However, a different investor asked about Mega Man and got a slightly different response, with Capcom saying that:
‘Including Mega Man 11, the latest entry in the franchise, Mega Man is one of Capcom’s historic IPs and is loved by fans, and as such we want to take care in how we develop the series. We are considering how to approach the production of new entries in the series, which requires numerous factors, including the development of a solid concept, ideas and gameplay, etc.’
Another investor asked specifically about new ports or collections for Mega Man and was told: ‘We are considering our approach to ports of past entries titles, which includes addressing technical issues.’

There’s still no detail there but it’s tempting to infer that Capcom’s plans for Mega Man are much more concrete, or at least closer to being unveiled, than for the other retro games mentioned.
At the very least, the surprise success of the Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection will hopefully mean more entries in that particular sub-series.
