Calvin Harris and Ellie Goulding swung by Capital Dance’s studios on Tuesday to chat about their latest collaboration, Miracle.
The track is currently the highest new entry in the UK singles chart, and while discussing their new banger, Calvin, 39, and Ellie, 36, revealed they used to work jobs in retail.
What’s more, both hitmakers once considered knocking their music careers on the head in favour of more traditional career paths.
Speaking to DJ MistaJam this week, Calvin – real name Adam Richard Wiles – said he used to work at Marks and Spencer, while doting mum Ellie opened up about her time working admin for a theatre.
Admitting he was struggling to get signed in his early twenties, Calvin shared: ‘Back then [I] was trying to get signed and [it] didn’t dawn on me that it wasn’t going to work until much later on.’
The Scottish DJ went on: ‘I was 21 or 23 by the time I got a record deal. I just didn’t care anymore, I was just making things, because I wanted to make them.’

Calvin added: ‘I had a job at M&S and I thought, you know what, I may just climb the ladder here, I’ll be a section manager or something.
‘I want a car, can I just do that? Can I just stop spending all my money on music?’
Ellie then chimed in: ‘I’m nodding because I had exactly the same. I wasn’t that young, but I worked at the clothes shop Monsoon and I worked in the theatre and the pub.’
The Burn singer added: ‘I had like three different jobs, and I thought, “I could probably do some sort of higher up admin job at the theatre”.’

Ellie further explained: ‘Because I kept getting no’s and I would take them quite personally. The difference now is that I don’t take those no’s that personally anymore, because I realise it’s all part of the process.’
Thankfully, Calvin and Ellie’s respective retail careers didn’t work out, which is good news, because the charts simply wouldn’t be the same without them.
