Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 – it’s true, all of it (Picture: Activision)
The official gameplay reveal for this year’s Call Of Duty has proven all the rumours true, which isn’t necessarily good news…
Activision has had its big unveil event for this year’s Call Of Duty, with the first footage of the game in action and details of the story campaign, multiplayer, and Zombies modes.
As has been the norm for the last few years, it took place within Warzone, confirming that Modern Warfare 3 will be a direct sequel to last year’s game – something which Activision claims it planned all along, but which others suggest is actually a result of it being repurposed DLC.
Considering the leakers got everything else right about the game it’s easy to assume they’re right about that too, although that’s certainly not something Activision is ever likely to admit in public.
As already confirmed, the story will involve Captain Price and Task Force 141 going up against the evil Vladimir Makarov, in a story that otherwise seems to have little in common with the original Modern Warfare 3 from 2011.
There did seem to be some interesting new elements to the campaign, with the addition of Open Combat Missions. These are open-ended, optional objectives that seem to be take place across the whole of a particular level, rather than just being quickly completed secondary objectives.
Activision previously described Zombies mode as ‘the largest Zombies offering to date’ and this is in part because it allows multiple teams to play on the same, extra large, map, which does sound neat. It’ll still be part of the Dark Aether saga, though, so it’s not a reboot or anything.

It’s the multiplayer mode that sounds less impressive, as while it launches with 16 multiplayer maps they’re all just remakes of maps from 2009’s Modern Warfare 2 (why not Modern Warfare 3?).
That means (deep breath): Afghan, Derail, Estate, Favela, Karachi, Highrise, Invasion, Quarry, Rundown, Rust, Scrapyard, Skidrow, Sub Base, Terminal, Underpass, and Wasteland.
They’ve all been remade from scratch, and tweaked to work for modern 6v6 play but, really… the fact that’s all they could come up with is as close to proof as you’re going to get for the DLC rumours.
There will be some new elements, including a new 3v3v3 mode called Cutthroat, a new stance that’s halfway between firing from the hip and aiming down sights, and the return of map voting and the classic mini-map – where unsuppressed fire is represented as red dots.

However, the only new maps will be three new Battle Maps for Ground War and Invasion only, plus a fourth that’s only for War Mode. None of the normal Deathmatch and other 6v6 modes will have any new maps that aren’t Modern Warfare 2 remakes.
Over a dozen new 6v6 maps will be added to the game in the months after its release, but not at launch. It’s also not clear whether Cutthroat is available from the start or if that’s something you’ll also have to wait for as well.
Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will launch on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC on November 10.
Although if you pre-order digitally, including the more expensive Vault Edition, you can play the campaign a week early and get beta early access too – again, just as the leaks already revealed.
