Call Of Duty 2023 doing the smart thing and skipping October launch

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 – how often do video game launch dates get leaked by federal judges? (Picture: Activision)

By releasing in November, the only competition for this year’s Call Of Duty will be the new WarioWare and Hogwarts Legacy’s Switch port.

While Activision has yet to share any real information about this year’s Call Of Duty game, there are plenty of leaks and rumours pointing to it being another Modern Warfare sequel. Albeit one from Sledgehammer Games rather than Infinity Ward, which usually handles the Modern Warfare titles.

Insider Tom Henderson, a regularly reliable source of Call Of Duty info, claims that the next game will be officially announced in August, followed by a November launch.

Said claims have now been corroborated, not by Activision but by the judge in the court case between Microsoft and the Federal Trade Commission.

This detail was picked up by CharlieIntel, with the official Call Of Duty Twitter account appearing to acknowledge it shortly afterwards by just tweeting out the eyes emoji, which is usually used to express surprise.

Previous Call Of Duty games have traditionally launched either late October or early November, so there’s nothing too shocking about this.

During the US FTC vs Microsoft hearing, the Federal Judge just confirmed Call of Duty 2023 launches in November. (Rumor was Nov 10, 2023).

However, Activision could have noticed how stacked October is for major launches compared to the much quieter November and is wisely saving Call Of Duty 2023 for later, so it has less competition.

As a reminder, October alone will see Spider-Man 2, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Alan Wake 2, Forza Motorsport, the Alone In The Dark remake, Detective Pikachu Returns, and possibly Sonic Superstars.

It’s ridiculous that some of these games aren’t opting for a delay just to avoid competing with one another, especially given how there’s relatively few major titles scheduled for Novemeber.

Henderson alleges that Call Of Duty’s 2023 exact launch date is November 10, putting it right between WarioWare: Move It! and the Nintendo Switch port of Hogwarts Legacy.

The former’s certainly no threat to Call Of Duty and the latter’s been available on other platforms since February, so it’s not going to have as much of an impact. Plus, both games are targeting Switch audiences, which Call Of Duty doesn’t have to worry about.
