Cabinet coup ‘forced Boris Johnson to abandon plan to cancel Christmas’
The Metro says Boris Johnson was set to cancel Christmas for a second year running over fears of the Omicron wave, reports say.
But a ‘cabinet coup’ stopped the Prime Minister from bringing in new Covid restrictions over the 2021 festive period, according to the Mail on Sunday.
With scores of countries worldwide – including some in the UK – bringing in harsh lockdown measures, England was an outlier in refusing to do so as Omicron ripped through the nation.
Ministers told Mr Johnson that a plan to bring in restrictions was ‘insane’, with the paper reporting that Chancellor Rishi Sunak, Commons leader Jacob Rees-Mogg and former Brexit Minister David Frost led the charge.
