    England’s tests and trace scheme ‘breaks data law’

    BBC News says privacy campaigners say England’s test and trace programme has broken a key data protection law. 

    The Department of Health has conceded that the initiative to trace contacts of people infected with Covid-19 was launched without carrying out an assessment of its impact on privacy. 

    The Open Rights Group (ORG) says the admission means the initiative has been unlawful since it began on 28 May.

    Senior doctors warn a second-wave could ‘cripple’ the NHS

    The Guardian says senior doctors are pleading with the public to help prevent a second-wave of coronavirus that could “devastate” the NHS, amid concern at mixed government messages about facemasks and returning to work. 

    Prof Carrie MacEwen said medics and health workers felt “totally reliant on the public understanding that this has certainly not disappeared and could come back and cause even more suffering for the population.”

    Covid-19 resurges across the world as deaths top 600,000

    France24 says the pandemic has found fresh legs around the world, as confirmed deaths pass 600,000 and countries from the US to South Africa or India struggle to contain a surge of new infections. Hong Kong issued tougher new rules on wearing face masks, Spain closed overcrowded beaches and Germany reported another outbreak at a slaughterhouse. 

    Pope Francis said “the pandemic is showing no sign of stopping” and urged compassion for those suffering during the outbreak has been worsened by conflicts.

    UAE reports 211 new coronavirus cases, 1 death 

    Arab News says the UAE confirmed 211 new coronavirus cases after conducting 47,000 additional tests, state news agency WAM reported.

    The country’s total number of infections now stands at 56,922 it added. One person also died from Covid-19, taking the country’s death toll to 339, health officials said.

    From engineers on cargo ships to waiters on luxury cruise liners, ocean-based workers around the world have been caught up in what the United Nations warns is a growing humanitarian crisis that has been blamed for several suicides.

    Details on coronavirus infections at US bases not being disclosed to the Japanese public

    Japan Times says information on coronavirus infections at U.S. bases in Japan is basically not being released to the public despite calls from the communities hosting them to disclose such data.

    Some 50,000 U.S. troops and about as many family members reside in Japan.

    The U.S. military has allowed the number of infected at bases in Okinawa Prefecture, which reached 143 as of Saturday, to be announced as an exception. But information on the Covid-19 situation at other bases in Japan has been kept secret.

    Australia state reports 275 new coronavirus cases, only 28 linked to unknown outbreaks

    CNN says Victoria has reported 275 new coronavirus cases in the past day, most of which are still under investigation, State Premier Daniel Andrews announced at a press conference today.

    Of the 275 new cases, 28 were linked to known outbreaks, while 247 are still being looked into by Victorian authorities.

    Andrews also announced that a woman in her 80s had died due to Covid-19, bringing Victoria’s death toll to 35.

    Sky News says Kanye West has suggested a payment of a million dollars for everyone who has a baby if he becomes the next US president.

    In a lengthy speech to an audience in North Charleston, South Carolina, on Sunday, the rapper spoke about topics such as abortion, religion and international trade.

    He said abortion should be legal but financial incentives for struggling mothers could lower the demand for it.
