England star Bukayo Saka makes plea to Facebook and Twitter in first statement since racist abuse
The Metro says: England and Arsenal star Bukayo Saka has urged Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to do more to prevent racist abuse online in his first statement since receiving a torrent of vile messages following his penalty miss in the Euro 2020 final.
The 19-year-old bravely stepped up to take England’s crucial fifth spot-kick in Sunday’s defeat to Italy, with his effort saved by Player of the Tournament Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Teammates Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho also missed their penalties and all three players were subjected to racist abuse across social media – with 12,500 abusive messages sent on Twitter alone – while a mural of Rashford in Manchester was defaced.
Saka says he was not surprised by the racist abuse he has endured since missing his penalty, calling on social media companies to do more to combat the problem, while he vowed to come back stronger and help England secure silverware in the future.
