Bruno Fernandes insists Ruben Amorim did not mean his scathing analysis of Manchester United last week after he described the current team as the worst in the club’s history.

Bruno Fernandes has come out and defended Ruben Amorim after his harsh comments on Manchester United’s players.

Speaking after United’s 3-1 defeat at home to Brighton last weekend, Amorim did not hold back after giving his players a dressing down at full time.

    The worst team in history

‘Imagine what this is for a fan of Manchester United. Imagine what this is for me,’ Amorim said.

‘We are getting a new coach who is losing more than the last coach. I have full knowledge of that.

‘We are the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United. I know you [media] want headlines but I am saying that because we have to acknowledge that and to change that. Here you go: your headlines.’

Amorim has since admitted that he regretted his comments and claimed he found it difficult to hide his frustration.

Ruben Amorim called Manchester United ‘the worst team in the club’s history’ after their loss to Brighton last week.

When asked about Amorim’s comments after United beat Rangers in the Europa League this week, Fernandes said: ‘I don’t want to see my manager saying certain things about the team because I know he doesn’t feel that.

‘I’m pretty sure in the moment of rage, I’m Portuguese, we fever pretty quick, the blood comes out very, very quick.

‘It’s that moment but to be honest, I was here with Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer], one of the calmest people I’ve met and he had this rage at the players sometimes.

‘When you’re in a position as a manager you want to win games, you know that you depend on the results and sometimes you need to have these kinds of words for your players.

‘It wasn’t anything out of context or something that we didn’t deserve to hear but he made himself part of that. When a manager makes himself a part of what he’s saying, no one can get angry or disappointed by that.

‘I think when he says ‘the worst team in Manchester’, he speaks about the position we are [in], look at where we are in the league we are in the worst position we’ve ever been.

‘So you have to take that, that’s the reality unfortunately. We are in this position for a long, long time and the club doesn’t belong there.

‘But we have to accept that and understand we need to push ourselves to much bigger things and to much higher positions because the reality is to play for this club you have to have the pressure, you have to have the balls to play for this club and you have to feel that in every moment.

Every game is a new chance to bring the club back to the position it deserves. Unfortunately for us, this season has been too much up and down, and every time we look like we’re getting there we get punched again and we go down. What we need to do is every time we get punched we need to get up and try to punch back.’
