Cold, frost and fog – this is the Wednesday morning that most people in the UK are waking up to – and there is no sign of relief.

Almost 200 flood warnings and alerts were still in force across England overnight amid the persistent rain that has turned motorways into rivers and made travel impossible.

Dorset and Somerset – where a dramatic operation has been ongoing to rescue people from floodwaters – have been hit the worst.

At least seven road closures remained in place last night and National Highways bosses were no longer giving an estimated timeframe for when severely flooded section of major roads will reopen.

The Met Office issued two yellow weather warnings for ice in Scotland, ending at 11am.

Forecasters warned of icy patches on untreated roads and paths leading to further travel disruptions in Edinburgh and parts of Aberdeenshire.

Temperatures there fell as low as -3°C overnight, resulting in a thick layer of frost on the ground.

Another warning – this time for rain – was in place for Northern Ireland, ending at 4am.

Forecasters have said the weather will finally turn dry for a short time today, with periods of sunshine lasting through the morning and early afternoon.

It will then turn windier and cloudier from the west though as we move through the afternoon, with rain following later, but will turn milder in the southwest.

Rain will then edge into Northern Ireland and Wales later.

The unsettled theme will continue into the rest of the week, including Saturday and Sunday, with temperatures around average.
