Black Mirror has come under fire for its Scottish accent in haunting new episode Loch Henry, but some of the cast are actually Scottish.
All five star-studded episodes of season 6 are available now on Netflix, and while Charlie Brooker’s dark anthology series has already left viewers impressed by the haunting stories, some things are leaving people stumped.
Taskmaster star and comedian Fern Brady is among them, and she was immediately put off when she tuned into Loch Henry – including the ‘bleak’ ending – and heard the Scottish accents.
The Scottish star tweeted: ‘I’m 1 min into the Scottish Black Mirror and already had to pause to cringe at the accents, whyyyyyy can’t we be normal on TV? Whyyyyy can’t we be played by actual Scottish people?’
Sharing a sweary pub scene with actors Samuel Blenkin and Daniel Portman, who play Davis and Stuart respectively, she quipped: ‘ChatGPT, show me how the Scotch people swear:’
However, it turns out Daniel – as well as fellow cast member Gregor Firth – is actually Scottish himself, even if the accents across the board were panned by viewers north of the border.

It’s not stopped people taking issue, with another fan adding: ‘The scottish accents in Black Mirror ep2 are horrendous… why not just use scottish actors instead of folk that try to sound like Mrs Doubtfire? #BlackMirror #LochHenry’
A different person saw the funny side, as they quipped: ‘*Black Mirror has a Scottish episode and all they do is swear*
‘Also me: “Why the f*** do they have to show us Scots as swearing??” 🤦♀️🙂🙃 #BlackMirror’
A third viewer wanted to know ‘what the actual f**k was going on with the Scottish accents’ in the show, while yet another suggested that the casting team should hire ‘actual Scottish people’ – which, to be fair, they did a bit.
They tweeted: ‘What even are the accents in Black Mirror’s Loch Henry @NetflixUK? Certainly no Scottish. Please get actual Scottish people to play Scottish characters.’
Despite some accent problems, it’s fair to say the response to the episode – and the series as a whole – has been great.

The synopsis for the episode reads: ‘A young couple travel to a sleepy Scottish town to start work on a genteel nature documentary – but find themselves drawn to a juicy local story involving shocking events of the past.’
Black Mirror season 6 is available to stream on Netflix.
