A man has died and two others have been left seriously injured after a bin lorry crashed into a building in Herefordshire.

The man, in his 60s, was a passenger in the vehicle, which also carried the driver and another passenger.

The driver and the second passenger were seriously injured and airlifted to hospital.

The incident occurred at around 6.40am in Leominster, according to West Mercia Police.

Superintendent Helen Wain said: “A cordon remains in place while the fire service and local authorities continue to work to make the building safe.

“Roads surrounding the building are closed and are expected to remain closed for some time.

“On behalf of all agencies, our thoughts and condolences are with those involved and the families affected by the incident.”

The building, initially thought to have been a house, was empty at the time and no one else was injured.

The West Midlands Ambulance Service said it received multiple 999 calls at around 6.45am reporting that a refuse lorry had collided with a property.

When ambulance staff arrived, they found a “significant” road traffic collision. Three passengers were trapped in the bin lorry.

“Due to structural damage to the building, all three emergency service teams worked rapidly together to safely extricate the patients,” a spokesperson said.

“Sadly, one male passenger was confirmed deceased at the scene.”

The driver and the remaining passenger were airlifted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham for further emergency care.

Herefordshire Council thanked the emergency services for their “swift response,” adding: “We are working with our partners to assess the situation. Further updates will be issued when more facts are known.”
