Bethesda don’t deserve it but Starfield is my game of the year – Reader’s Feature

Starfield – game of the year? (pic: Microsoft)

A reader explains why Starfield is already one of this favourite games and why he’s upset about the way Bethesda has been acting recently.

Before Skyrim came along I had no interest in role-playing games and I would go out of my way to avoid them. It’s hard for me to even remember why now, but I think it’s just because they were viewed as too nerdy and uncool when I was younger, so I always ignored them and assumed they weren’t for me. When Skyrim was getting rave reviews though I got interested and ended up borrowing a copy from my friend. I loved it!

Ever since I’ve got into lots of different role-players, both Japanese and Western, although more the action-orientated ones rather than anything turn-based – so I’m not too interested in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Starfield though, naturally, I was very excited about and I bought the Premium Edition so that I could play it five days early. And I’ve not been disappointed. I know there’s a lot of disagreement about how good it is, but for me it is exactly what I was hoping for and I’ve been playing it non-stop and am already on my first New Game+ run through.

I love the freedom of space travel and the ability to visit wherever I want, while also doing whatever I want. Just like that first time playing Skyrim, I ignored the story for hours on end, just because there was so much else to do and it was more fun to make my own adventure as I went along. I don’t agree that the exploration is poor in Starfield, it’s just more spread out, but there’s always something new and exciting to find on every planet.

This is especially true if you get into the crafting, because you need all these different resources you need to find, and then you have to set up outposts to manufacture the super rare ones. That whole angle is almost a game all in its own and that’s before you even start getting into the side quests and combat.

I also love how the skill tree works. I think skill trees in role-playing games have been getting worse and worse in recent years, either being made up of trivial abilities you don’t care about or just being filled with things you should’ve had from the start.

In Starfield though everything is much better thought out and so many of them add completely new abilities, like the jetpack ability or starship targeting, which I love. It’s also actually difficult to unlock new levels, instead of just get skill points for doing nothing and unlocking a new, worthless ability every five minutes.

It’s a fantastic game and I almost didn’t write this because I wanted to get back to it. But I do want to say that I am not proud of how Bethesda has been acting the last few weeks. The whole review copy controversy was really bad and is only going to turn people against them, while making it look like they’re trying to hide something.

Starfield planets were purposefully designed to be ‘boring’ says Bethesda

We all know what not having a review copy on time means but, in my opinion, there is nothing to worry about with Starfield. Bethesda seem to be acting very arrogantly through the whole thing and coming out with some very dubious comments. It comes across as overly defensive to me and really puts me of from being a fan of theirs. Although in my opinion it should always be the game that gets you loyalty, not anything else.

In that sense Starfield has my 100% devotion and I know I will be playing it for years to come. I can’t wait to get back to it!
