Ben Foster has teased the possibility of remaining at Wrexham for another year, with Hollywood owner Ryan Reynolds cheekily claiming he has now ‘verbally signed’ an extension.
The 40-year-old came out of retirement in March to cover a goalkeeping injury crisis and has made seven appearances so far, notably saving a stoppage-time penalty against Notts County.
He was between the sticks on Saturday evening as Wrexham secured the National League title with a game to spare courtesy of a 3-1 win over Boreham Wood, ending their 15-year absence from the Football League.
There were wild scenes of celebration at the Racecourse Ground and Foster captured it all on his GoPro for his YouTube channel, also revealing a very interesting conversation with Reynolds amid the pandemonium.
Foster, who won the Football League Trophy with Wrexham in 2005 while on loan, was chatting to the Deadpool star, who said to him: ‘You’ve been here before.’
Foster then replied: ‘We’ll do it again next year!’
That prompted a joyous reaction from Reynolds, who jumped into Foster’s arms and said: ‘Yes! Alright that’s the contract.
‘He said, “We’ll do it again next year.” That’s it, done. That is as good as gold. You just verbally signed.’

Foster was a little more non-committal later in the day, saying: ‘I keep telling the lads, you don’t get many of these moments. You don’t. I think this is my third promotion in my whole 20-year career and it feels so good.
‘At the age of 40 – the ripe old age of 40 – that was about as good as it gets, genuinely that means so much to me. I can see how much it means to the fans, I can see how much it means to the players. That has been incredible. What a day.
‘We are up baby. We are going to be playing League Two football next year and that feels absolutely sweet. Will I stay on for another year? I don’t know yet. We’ll see, we’ll see. That felt so good though, that’s all I do know.’

In his post-match press conference, he added: ‘You have to contemplate it because to be part of this team, to be part of Wrexham is a special thing. It really is.
‘It’s nice to be a man of leisure and freedom and stuff like that and I’ve really enjoyed my retirement, I’ve had a great time.
‘What I will say is that I’ve enjoyed this so much – Wrexham is a really special club.
‘The lads that we’ve got are absolutely top class and it’s a pleasure to come to work with every single one of them, every single day.’
