BBC viewers outraged after fan-favourite show is suddenly dropped for Wimbledon

People hoping to tune into Emily Atack’s appearance on Who Do You Think You Are? were left disappointed on Thursday night thanks to Wimbledon.

A tense match between 2013 and 2016 champion Andy Murray and Greek fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas ran over as it entered a gruelling fourth set.

The BBC had originally intended to keep showing the match on BBC Two at 9pm so an episode of Who Do You Think You Are?, with Emily Atack, could be broadcast.

However, those watching on BBC One were instead told that the match would be continuing on the current channel, with Emily’s episode going out on BBC Two instead.

The last-minute nature of the decision left many viewers disappointed – especially those who had set their TVs to record the episode on BBC One.

This meant that those who had planned to catch up later on were disappointed to find that Andy’s match, which continues on Friday, had been recorded instead.

One Twitter user expressed their disappointment by saying: ‘Damn. I’m missing Emily Atack on Who Do You Think You Are. Stupid tennis.’

A second person said: ‘Not in the least interested in Wimbledon, even if Murray’s on or not. You could have continued his match on BBC Two.’

They continued: ‘[Don’t] shove Emily Atack’s Who Do You Think You Are there’. Those who were recording it on BBC1 have lost it.’

However, despite the sudden change in schedules, many were still able to switch over and watch Emily Atack’s charming and emotional episode on BBC Two.

In it, viewers were treated to photographs of Emily and Sir Paul McCartney, who is related to the Inbetweeners actress on her mother’s side of the family.

‘[Forget] the tennis, cricket, and anything else on TV. Emily Atack is on BBC Two,’ one user said, who watched on as Emily’s musical heritage was revealed.

However, there were sad moments, as Emily discovered that her great-great grandfather had taken his own life in 1889 when he was 33 years old.

After discovering this part of her family history, she admitted that her dad’s side of the family had become very sensitive about it.
