BBC faces backlash for ‘controversial’ interview with Andrew Tate: ‘I can’t imagine how survivors feel’

BBC’s decision to sit down with divisive figure Andrew Tate for an interview has been questioned.

The social media influencer has previously said women ‘bear some responsibility for being attacked,’ claimed that their place is in the home, and referred to them as the ‘property’ of men.

He also has revealed that dating younger women is better as you can ‘make an imprint.’

Tate, 36, is currently on house arrest after spending three months in a Romanian jail on suspicion of organised crime and human trafficking. He has denied the allegations.

BBC News reporter Lucy Williamson was granted access to Tate at his home for Andrew Tate: The Interview, and put to him allegations of rape, and exploiting women, which he dismissed.

She also challenged him on his views on women, to which he responded that he was ‘acting under the instruction of God to do good things.’

Williamson asked Tate about a specific woman, who has accused him of manipulating her into webcam work and getting his name tattooed on her. Tate responded that she was possibly made up.

Not all viewers were happy that the interview even took place.

One person wrote: ‘Why has the BBC done an interview tonight with the vile misogynist Andrew Tate? WHY give him airtime?’

‘This was the worst “interview” because of course he denied everything all the way through. (Felt for the journalist).’

‘Why the hell is the BBC giving Andrew Tate a platform when he’s on trial for rape, sex trafficking and exploiting women. He called a complainant’s allegations ‘imaginary.’ I can’t imagine how survivors feel watching this. It’s a slap in the face,’ wrote another.

BBC – why are you giving air time to Andrew Tate? My children’s school had to do an entire lesson on teaching pupils about the dangers of this man’s grotesque ideology – and you give him a platform?

I’m paying a licence fee for this? For this shit?

    Stop.

Another person mentioned their annoyance at their license fee funding the chat.

‘My children’s school had to do an entire lesson on teaching pupils about the dangers of this man’s grotesque ideology – and you give him a platform?

‘I’m paying a licence fee for this? For this s**t? Stop,’ they concluded.

The response wasn’t all negative – some viewers commended Williamson’s interview style, with one person calling it ‘absolutely magnificent’ journalism.

While some Tate supporters claimed he ‘owned’ and ‘humbled’ Williamson.

Metro.co.uk have reached out to BBC for comment.

Andrew Tate: The Interview is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
