Barbie blonde is the next big hair colour trend – here’s how to achieve it

The live-action Barbie film is nowhere near out yet, but already Barbie-fever is taking over.

Hair stylists are predicting ‘Barbie blonde’ will be the shade of the year in 2023, with more people taking a leaf out of Margot Robbie’s platinum do for the movie.

Though interestingly, a Barbie blonde isn’t the iciest of blondes out there – even though it’s extremely light, it has warmth – dare we say, the slightest touch of yellow.

For years the trend has been to ice out blonde hair, stripping it of any warmth.

    That’s about to change.

    What to ask your hairdresser

Nicole Petty, hair expert at Milk & Blush, says: ‘Inspired by Margot Robbie in the upcoming Barbie movie, Barbie blonde is a hair colour that’s slightly warmer than other blonde tones.

‘Ask for platinum blonde hair that looks creamy and sun-kissed, taking a picture of the Hollywood star into the salon as inspiration.

‘To achieve the style, your hairdresser will first need to lift the hair to level 10.

‘But whether or not they use a glaze or a toner will depend on your preference, as traditionally, Barbie styles leave the toner.’

A toner will make it less yellow, and more cool toned.

How to maintain Barbie blonde hair

Don’t think that just because this style is less icy means that it requires less maintenance.

Nicole says: ‘As this is a single-process colour, your hair can become very dry and brittle.

‘Try to limit the number of times you wash your hair a week, using products specifically designed for blonde locks, such as purple shampoo, to combat too much brassiness.

‘Rinsing your hair with cool water will stop the colour from coming out quite so quickly too.

‘Additionally, avoid putting heat on your hair unless necessary and if you do, ensure you use heat-protectant products.

‘You’ll also want to use a deep-conditioning hair mask once a week to introduce extra moisture to the ends of your hair.’

Light blonde hair is known for appearing less shiny, so load up on gloss sprays to emulate Barbie hair.

    Other takes on Barbie blonde

There are other takes on the trend, too.

Nicole says: ‘While this has traditionally been a single-process hair colour, there’s been a variety of takes on the iconic style lately.

‘For example, Megan Fox stepped out with icy blonde Barbie-inspired hair last month, which was ashier, with a dark shadow root.

‘And you could also go for a more toned-down, multi-dimensional look with highlights and toner to remove the brassiness.

‘Alternatively, you can play on the Barbie theme by investing in some XXL blonde clip-in or tape-in extensions.’

Extensions can be a fun way to try the trend without committing to a full head of bleach.
