Bad Company guitarist and songwriter Mick Ralphs has died at the age of 81.

The 70s rock musician’s death was announced via a message on the official Bad Company website on Monday.

In a statement from Ralphs’ bandmate Paul Rodgers, the singer said ‘his heart hit the ground’ with the news.

‘He has left us with exceptional songs and memories. He was my friend, my songwriting partner, an amazing and versatile guitarist who had the greatest sense of humour,’ the statement from Rodgers read.

‘Our last conversation a few days ago we shared a laugh but it won’t be our last. There are many memories of Mick that will create laughter.

‘I will see you in heaven.’

Ralphs co-founded the 70s rock band

Ralphs, who was part of the band from its inception in 1973, is survived by his two children, three step-children and partner Susie Chavasse, who Rodgers described as ‘his one true love’.

Drummer Simon Kirke also shared a statement in the wake of Ralphs’ death, saying: ‘He was a dear friend, a wonderful songwriter, and an exceptional guitarist. We will miss him deeply.’

Ralphs’ final performance with Bad Company was in October 2016, before he suffered a stroke the following month.

Bad Company was made from the combined members of the bands Free, Mott The Hoople and King Crimsons. Ralphs and Rodgers were joined by Kirke, on drums, and vocalist/guitarist Raymond ‘Boz’ Burrell.

Ralphs had been part of Mott The Hoople, known for their 1972 song All The Young Dudes, which was penned by David Bowie.

Bad Company are set to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame later this year, after first rising to fame with their self-titled debut album in 1974.

The album included hits such as Can’t Get Enough and Movin’ On and went on to peak at the third spot on the UK albums chart, going five-times platinum.

Bad Company later released Straight Shooter in 1975, followed by Run With The Pack, and both made it into the top five in the albums chart.

They were also known for rock anthems including Ready For Love, Rock Steady and the title track Bad Company.
