Average five-year fixed mortgage rates now above 6% Following last month’s interest rate hike, a typical five-year fixed mortgage deal now has an interest rate of more than 6%. Last month the Bank of England raised interest rates to a 15-year-high of 5% in an attempt to bring down inflation.  Mortgage lenders have been increasing rates and withdrawing deals recently, which has been driving up costs for homeowners. Wrexham nurse sacked after death of secret lover patient in car park Penelope Williams, a nurse who didn’t call an ambulance after a patient she was having an affair with collapsed and died, has been sacked. Williams had been having a secret relationship with the man, known as Patient A. In January 2022, the pair met up late at night in a hospital car park. Patient A was found unresponsive with his trousers down and died of heart failure and chronic kidney disease. Sainsbury’s boss says food price rises starting to slow Sainsbury’s boss Simon Roberts has said food prices are not rising as quickly as they were, helping to boost the amount customers are buying. The supermarket chain saw an increase of nearly 10% in the value of goods it sold in April, May and June. Steven Gerrard named manager of Saudi Pro League Al-Ettifaq Steven Gerrard has been named as manager of Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq. Gerrard, 43, said in June that he had been invited to Saudi to “look at ta potential offer” but that he would not be taking it up. “Without a doubt, Gerrard’s presence will be an addition and a quantum leap to our league,” said Khalid Al-Dabal, the club’s chairman. Moscow airport flights disrupted by drone attack Flights from Vnukovo International Airport are being diverted amid a drone attack on Moscow, according to the Russian defence ministry.  The attack reportedly used five drones, which also targeted locations in the wider region around the capital. The defence ministry said all the drones were shot down and there are no reported casualties or damage. Ukraine has not claimed responsibility for the alleged attack.
