‘Small boats week’ ignores wider context of irregular immigration in UK THE GUARDIAN says Rishi Sunak’s “small boats week” has been marked by the government actioning its promise to house asylum seekers on a barge, then having to remove them; bad language; and, from the government’s perspective, bad numbers. The official figures show the number of people arriving in the UK in small boats since 2018 has topped 100,000, an arbitrary figure but one that has caused much Conservative ire. Chief among those critics was the party’s deputy chair, Lee Anderson. The MP for Ashfield said the government was failing…

Because it makes everybody look bad.” The real-life Downing Street operation may be learning a similar lesson to this during their summer campaign to try and create dividing lines with Labour on key election issues. Put plainly: is it wise to throw the spotlight onto policy areas like housing, migration and health when the Conservative’s own record is patchy at best? Take…
Sunak under pressure over ‘appalling’ small boat deaths – as 500 more people cross Channel THE INDEPENDENT says Rishi Sunak is under intense pressure to do more to tackle the small boats crisis following the “appalling and preventable” tragedy that saw the deaths of six people when a vessel sank off the coast of France on Saturday. Fresh calls for action came as it emerged that a further 509 people crossed the English Channel in 10 small boats on Saturday, despite the perilous nature of the crossing, bringing the total for the year so far to 16,679. Senior Conservatives joined…
Tory Small Boats Week ‘Not A Good Idea’, Says Senior Conservative HUFFPOST says Rishi Sunak’s plan to blanket the airwaves with coverage of government attempts to prevent people crossing the channel was “not a good idea”, a senior Tory has said, given what happened last week. The prime minister has made “stop the boats” one of his top five pledges to voters ahead of the election. Before heading to California on holiday, the prime minister lined up major announcements to demonstrate how his government was achieving this target.
