Editorial 24 June 2024. There’ll be little surprise that Monday’s front pages continue to be dominated by the upcoming general election. One of Monday’s popular focus points is the ongoing fallout from the Conservative Party election betting scandals. It’s a story mostly picked up the left-leaning newspapers, whilst the traditional right-leaning Conservative-supporting press leads on Labour – with stories around transgender legislation and fears of what a Labour government will do in power – especially if they end up with a ‘super majority’. Elsewhere, several front pages feature images of Scotland – who crashed out of the Euros yesterday, following…
T20 World Cup: Afghanistan shock Australia to keep semi-final hopes alive Afghanistan shocked Australia with a historic 21-run win in St Vincent, keeping their T20 World Cup hopes alive. Needing a victory to avoid elimination, Afghanistan posted a challenging total of 148-6, thanks to a superb opening stand of 118 between Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran. Australia’s chase faltered early, reduced to 32-3 before Glenn Maxwell’s rapid half-century steadied the ship. However, Gulbadin Naib’s crucial wickets, including Maxwell’s, triggered an Australian collapse from 106-6 to 113-9, sealing Afghanistan’s first win over Australia in any form of cricket. Pat Cummins took…
One dead in Swiss floods as Alpine resort Zermatt cut off The body of a man has been found following severe flooding in the south-eastern Swiss town of Misox, in the alpine valley of Graubünden, also known as Grisons. A massive thunderstorm on Friday night caused rivers to overflow, flooding streets and leading to the evacuation of several dozen residents. Initially, four people were reported missing. A woman was later found under rocks and taken to a hospital in Lugano. On Sunday, police confirmed that a man’s body was discovered eight kilometres (five miles) from where he disappeared. Rescue efforts…

Six attackers were killed, but police are still searching for others involved. Dagestan’s leader, Sergei Melikov, announced three days of mourning starting Monday. Among the dead is an Orthodox priest, Father Nikolai, who had served in Derbent for over 40 years. Two churches and two synagogues were attacked, with a synagogue…
Hungary’s Varga stable after going off on stretcher Hungary striker Barnabas Varga is stable in hospital following a collision with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn during Sunday’s Euro 2024 match. Varga sustained a fractured cheekbone and will undergo surgery, as confirmed by Hungary manager Marco Rossi. “Varga is okay,” said Rossi, adding that although Varga will be operated on, he is healthy and not at any risk. “Unfortunately he will be operated on because he suffered a fracture. We will see [what happens]. If we progress in the tournament for sure he will not be with us.” The match was delayed…
Intense fighting in Rafah near end, says Netanyahu Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that the “intense phase” of fighting in Rafah, southern Gaza, is nearly over, but emphasised that the war against Hamas is not ending until the group is fully ousted from power. Netanyahu stated that the Israeli military will soon redeploy troops to the Lebanon border, where clashes with Hezbollah are escalating. He rejected the idea of the West Bank-based Palestinian Authority taking over Gaza, advocating instead for ongoing military demilitarisation by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and a civil administration supported by regional countries. Residents in…
