Wednesday’s front pages are dominated by last night’s escalation in the Middle East following Iran’s missile attack on Israel (in response to Israeli attacks on Lebanon and the killing of the Hezbollah leader) and Israel’s vow to respond. It has led to fears that an all-out war is on the horizon.
Many of the newspaper’s editorials and leader columns call on greater diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the crisis.
Netanyahu vows response for missile attack saying Iran will “pay” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Iran will “pay” after around 180 missiles were fired at Israel, from Iran, on Tuesday. Most of the missiles were intercepted by the US and Israel. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said the missile attack was a “decisive” response in defending Iranian interests against “aggressive acts”. Israel had recently killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and unleashed a series of deadly communication device explosions. On Tuesday, Israel launched a ground invasion of Lebanon and continued airstrikes on Beirut overnight. Hezbollah says it repelled an Israeli ground…
Seven killed in shooting and knife attack in Tel Aviv Seven people were killed in a combined shooting and knife attack in Tel Aviv’s Jaffa area, Israeli police have confirmed. The attackers opened fire on the public, beginning in a rail carriage and continuing onto the platform. Several others were injured, some critically, as the violence unfolded. Social media footage captured scenes of motionless bodies on the street. The gunman and a second attacker armed with a knife were “neutralised” by bystanders, with authorities labelling the incident as a “terror” attack. While the attackers’ identities have not been disclosed, initial…
US helps shoot down Iran missiles The US played an active role in defending Israel during a barrage of Iranian ballistic missiles, according to the Pentagon. The attack, which saw approximately 180 missiles fired at Israel, was intercepted by both Israeli defence systems and US Navy destroyers, which launched about a dozen interceptors in response. US President Joe Biden confirmed the US support, emphasising that it was done under his direction and lauding both the US and Israeli military capabilities. The Iranian attack was described by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian as a “decisive” response, defending Iranian interests. In contrast, US…
P Diddy faces more than 100 new assault allegations More than 100 individuals are set to sue rap musician P Diddy for sexual assault, rape, and sexual exploitation, according to US lawyer Tony Buzbee. Some alleged victims include minors, with accusations of abuse going back to when they were as young as nine years old. Erica Wolff, a lawyer representing Mr Combs, has categorically denied the accusations, calling them “false and defamatory.” The lawsuit is the latest in a series of legal challenges for Mr Combs, who was recently arrested and faces criminal charges for racketeering and sex trafficking. He…
