Friday’s newspaper headlines reflect a wider variety of news than what we’ve seen during the week. The latest in the Middle East makes several front splashes but does not dominate the newspapers this morning. 

A handful of papers report on Joe Biden’s comments on a potential Israeli retaliatory attack on oil – his comments have led to the price of oil rising to its highest in more than a month. 

News that the UK is set to hand over sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius has led the right-leaning newspapers into meltdown – despite the plans to hand back the island being drawn up under the Conservative government.

World-first ovarian cancer vaccine being developed in the UK in bid to wipe out disease The world’s first vaccine to prevent ovarian cancer is being developed in the UK and could save thousands of lives, eventually wiping out the disease, researchers claim. Scientists at the University of Oxford are creating OvarianVax, a vaccine that teaches the immune system to recognise and attack the earliest stages of ovarian cancer. The hope is that the jab could be given to women preventatively on the NHS with the aim of eliminating the disease, which kills around 4,100 women in the UK each year.…

Massive blast near Beirut airport as Israeli strikes intensify Israeli air strikes on Lebanon have intensified, with massive explosions reported in southern Beirut. One of the strikes hit near the city’s international airport, close to the Hezbollah stronghold of Dahieh. Despite the proximity to the airport, it remains operational.  According to US media reports, a key target of the strikes was Hashem Safieddine, the presumed next leader of Hezbollah. His condition remains unclear following the attack. Israel issues more evacuation orders in southern Lebanon, hospitals & health centres bombed Israel has issued further evacuation orders to people in southern Lebanon that are outside the UN-declared buffer zone. The latest appears to signal a widening ground attack – which started earlier in the week.  The new orders come after a night of heavy airstrikes on the capital in Beirut.
