One of the most popular streamers on Twitch said artists opinion ‘don’t matter’ when discussing AI and its possible use in Palworld.
Palworld may well end up being the biggest game of the year, after selling millions of copies since its early access release last week, and becoming the second most played game on Steam while doing so.
Palworld’s launch hasn’t gone without criticism, however, as its creatures’ similarity to pokémon has made many question if AI was trained on pokémon to create the designs.
Twitch streamer Asmongold addressed the issue, saying that the only opinion that matters is the paying customer, in regards to whether AI in games is good or bad, but he has faced severe backlash from fans and a Dead By Daylight dev.
A video clip from a recent stream has gone viral, with 33 million views on Twitter, where Asmongold said:
‘Artists opinions don’t matter. Because what matters is the opinion of the people that are buying the product. It’s not relevant.’
‘It’s like whenever one of these really well respected directors talk about how bad Marvel is… shut up old man.’
That’s almost certainly a reference to Martin Scorsese, whose comments in 2019 have been re-evaluated by many in light of the failure of several recent superhero movies. Either way, Asmongold doesn’t seem to have many allies in the comment section.
‘For the record, I don’t care about Palworld vs. Pokémon discussion but I know when something is wrong. Play whatever you wanna play, but don’t disrespect the artist or/and say stupid s*** like Asmongold did. Have a nice day,’ said Jeannette Feliz, who posted the clip on Twitter.
Lead character artist on Dead By Daylight, Eric Bourdages, had perhaps the strongest opinion about the clip, saying:
‘Guy sits in his filth, consuming things that wouldn’t exist without artists. Sh*ts on artists, sh*ts on devs, shi*s on gamers probably sh*ts on the floor in his bedroom and still somehow people will say he’s based. Anyways don’t listen to me, my opinion doesn’t matter.’
Fellow streamer Macaiyla encouraged people to stop listening to streamers all together.
Asmongold later responded to the backlash, doubling down on his opinion, in his own tweet:
‘Am I wrong about this? Looking at so many people angry with what I said is kind of shocking to me. When you go to market with a product, the only thing that matters is the consumers perception of that products value. When did this become wrong?’

YouTuber Pilgrim argued that Asmongold ‘spat on the artists talent’, but Asmongold didn’t seem interested in talking about how it actually affects artists, saying:
‘You’re absolutely right but the value those things have exists because people like me say it does. One of the special things about almost all art is that it has no intrinsic value or function and instead is valued subjectively.’
