As Arsenal head up to Anfield for a top-of-the-table clash with Liverpool on Saturday, Mikel Arteta’s side know they will have to banish plenty of demons if they are to stay top of the Premier League table.

Not only do Arsenal have to contend with a new-look Liverpool side that is slowly clicking into gear under Jurgen Klopp this term, but they must also overcome their abject recent at Anfield which has seen the Gunners fail to win in their last 13 attempts in all competitions.

Arsenal’s winless run stretches back to September 2012, when they secured a 2-0 win at Anfield with a midfield that featured current manager Arteta.

In their 11-year hoodoo since, Arsenal have suffered plenty of nightmare displays. Here’s some of the worst:

Arsenal came into this game with a ten-match unbeaten run in all competitions, with a team fit and firing at the start of Arteta’s second full season in charge. The result, however, was exactly the same as the Reds cruised to a 4-0 home victory thanks to goals from Sadio Mane, Jota and Mohamed Salah either side of the break.

Even Takumi Minamino got in on the act off the bench late on.

Arteta went unbeaten in his first two matches against Liverpool after taking the Arsenal job – at home the prior season and in the Community Sheild – but a different task awaited him in his first visit to Anfield as a manager.

And the Spaniard wasn’t able to end his side’s poor run away from home as, despite taking the lead through Alexandre Lacazette, the Gunners slumped to a 3-1 loss after goals from Mane, Andrew Robertson and Jota.

As the only two teams with a perfect start to the 2018-19 season after two games, something had to give in this encounter. In the end, it was Arsenal who suffered their first defeat of the season, with another disappointing display at Anfield.

Joel Matip’s first-half header, followed up by Salah’s second-half double saw Klopp’s side breeze to a comfortable 3-1 win on that occasion.

Unai Emery’s side had done well to hold Liverpool to a 1-1 draw at the Emirates in the Spaniard’s first game against Liverpool as Arsenal manager. But all that goodwill went out the window just a month later after they were thumped 5-1 in the reverse fixture in Merseyside.

Arsenal took the lead through Ainsley Maitland-Niles but proceeded to ship four first-half goals as a Robert Firmino hat-trick guided Liverpool to a massive victory.

Liverpool 4-0 Arsenal | Premier League, August 2017

He wasn’t to know at the time, but this was to be Arsene Wenger’s last visit to Anfield as Arsenal boss.

And it didn’t go the way of the legendary Frenchman as his side were hammered 4-0 courtesy of goals from Firmino, Mane, Salah and a late strike from Daniel Sturridge.

In February 2014, Arsenal arrived at Anfield top of the league and high on confidence. Step forward Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool, who enacted revenge for Arsenal’s away victory the season prior with an emphatic 5-1 demolition of Wenger’s side.

Four goals in the opening 20 minutes – including two from centre-back Martin Skrtel – laid the groundwork for the thumping win, with Mikel Arteta’s second-half penalty the only note of consolation for Arsenal on the day.
