Arsenal are awaiting a response from Ajax after submitting an improved second bid to sign defender Jurrien Timber.
The Gunners had an initial offer rejected by the Dutch giants last week.
That bid was believed to be around £30m, which is significantly below Ajax’s £50m asking price.
Timber came close to joining Manchester United last summer but decided to stay in Amsterdam after a warning from then-Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal about playing time before the World Cup in Qatar.
However, Timber now feels ready to move to the Premier League and Arsenal are leading the chase for his signature.
Despite interest from Bayern Munich, Timber wants to join Arsenal and he’s already agreed personal terms with the Gunners.
Mikel Arteta is keen to bolster his defence and Timber’s ability to play at centre-back and right-back has appealed to the Spaniard.
While Timber prefers playing centrally, his ability to come in-field as a right-back would suit Arteta’s system.
Oleksandr Zinchenko played as an inverted left-back last term but Ben White was not as comfortable doing so from the right side.
Timber is comfortable at stepping into midfield, and can even play as a defensive midfielder if needed.
