Cliff notes – Apple stocks slide after Trump’s tariffs

    • Apple stocks slide: Trump’s new tariffs, including a 10 percent levy on all countries, caused Apple’s stock to drop over six percent. The company depends on manufacturing in places like China and Taiwan.
    • Broader Market Reaction: The tariffs led to a 2.8 percent drop in the S&P 500 and a 3 percent decline in the Nasdaq 100. Markets reacted negatively to the trade uncertainty.
    • Trump’s Support for Apple’s U.S. Investment: Trump praised Apple and other tech giants for investing in the U.S. He highlighted Apple’s plan to invest $500 billion and build more plants in the country.

Apple stocks slide after Trump tariffs

Apple’s stock took a significant hit following the announcement of new tariffs by President Donald Trump, dropping more than six percent in late-night trading on Wednesday. Trump’s decision to impose a blanket 10 percent tariff on all countries, with even higher levies on nations like China and Taiwan, sent ripples through global markets, particularly affecting tech stocks.

As most of Apple’s products are manufactured in China and other Asian countries, the company is particularly vulnerable to these tariff increases. The broader market also reacted negatively to Trump’s tariff announcement, with the S&P 500 falling by 2.8 percent and the Nasdaq 100 dropping more than 3 percent, according to exchange-traded funds tracking the markets.

Despite the immediate market fallout, Trump took the opportunity to praise Apple and other major tech companies, including Meta and Nvidia, for their investments in the U.S. economy. He highlighted Apple’s planned $500 billion investment, emphasizing that the company would soon build more of its manufacturing plants in the United States, a move he suggested would benefit the American economy.
