Amazon Prime Video watchers have just a week left before the acclaimed horror, The Silence of the Lambs, leaves the streamer.

The 1991 movie starring Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster follows Clarice Starling, an FBI cadet, seeking help from a serial killer Hannibal Lecter to apprehend another prolific murderer, Buffalo Bill, targeting young women and removing the skin from their bodies.

The iconic movie is one of just a handful of movies to win the ‘big five’ Oscars – picture, best actor, best actress, best director and best adapted screenplay – and has cemented itself in horror movie history.

Scoring an impressive 95% on Rotten Tomatoes to go with it, if you still need more convincing to give it a try, fans from over the years have shared nothing but praise for its stomach-churning plot.

‘Hopkins absolutely nails the creepy, calculating Hannibal, making his performance unforgettable. Foster’s portrayal of Clarice balances strength and vulnerability, adding a real human element to the tension,’ Rotten Tomatoes User Jaxon H praised.

‘GREATEST VILLAIN OF ALL TIME!!! The acting, story, characters are so incredible,’ Darcy J echoed.

‘The Silence of the Lambs is one of the creepiest and most intense thrillers ever made.

‘The atmosphere is dark and unsettling, which makes everything even more gripping. If you like thrillers that mess with your mind, you have to watch this. It’s disturbing but in a way that makes you appreciate how good it is,’ Aptem agreed.

‘Will always remain one of the greats. Hopkins and Foster shines properly in character here. Directing is first class. Gripping and always shifting between the dark and light, doubt and facts, bizarre and sense, psycho and insane logic. Intelligent and intriguing. Absolute benchmark classic,’ Frans B said.

Reflecting on the movie’s legacy in 2021 to Vanity Fair, Jodie said: ‘What’s surprising about [the movie being intense] is that there’s really no blood and gore. There’s only really one scene that is at all gory.

‘The movie is so scary because it seeps into people’s consciousness through fears. It really works on fear more than anything else.’

And Anthony reminisced on how the iconic scene of his reveal in the prison cell came about.

It has a mammoth cultural legacy – especially in the horror genre (Picture: Moviestore/REX/Shutterstock)

‘I remember the day when Jonathan asked me [how I wanted to be revealed in the prison cell for the first time].

‘It was Monday, January the 9th, 1990, and he said, “The camera’s going to be Jodie coming down the corridor. How’d you want to be seen? Do you want to be standing, or reading, or asleep, or something?” I said, “No. I’d like to be standing.”

‘”Where?” I said, “In the centre of the cell.” “Why?” I said, “I can smell her.” He said, “You are crazy.”,’ he recalled.

The Silence of the Lambs is streaming on Amazon Prime Video until June 1.
