Fans were left devastated after the BBC announced long-running panel show A Question of Sport would be scrapped.

The outpouring of love for the sports quiz show that has been on screens for 53 years led to an iconic clip resurfacing.

Back in 2016, Paul O’Connell was paired up with captain Phil Tufnell and jockey AP McCoy against Matt Dawson, Leon Osman and Elinor Barker.

The Irish rugby coach managed to pull an unbelievable answer out of the bag after a speedy buzzer answer from AP secured a win.

For the quick fire round, both teams had to be first to a buzzer to answer a question which meant they could guess a 23 letter puzzle.

After revealing two letters with AP’s lightning reflexes, Paul decided to take a punt at the answer and to the shock of everyone got it right.

‘It’s Borussia Monchengladbach no?’ asked the former rugby player to uproar from the studio as the German football club turned out to be correct.

Team captain Phil was beside himself in fits of giggles as even the opposition applauded the incredible answer.

Matt stood up and encouraged the audience to keep cheering as Paul himself laughed in total disbelief at his own achievement.

The show was axed due to ‘dwindling’ ratings after first airing in January 1970 but the BBC reserved the rights to bring it back in the future.

A BBC spokesperson confirmed to Metro.co.uk: ‘Due to inflation and funding challenges, difficult decisions have to be made, therefore Question of Sport is currently not in production at the moment.’

A Question of Sport started out with David Vine at the helm for seven series, with David Coleman taking over from him until 1997.

Sue Barker joined the team in 1997 and presented until 2021, with the show still pulling in up to four million viewers towards the end of her stint.

However, rates have been slowly slipping since Paddy McGuinness took over, with a whole new line up for team captains which proved to be divisive.
