Alonso Dominates Singapore Grand Prix FP1; Albon Sidelined by Brake Fire

Fernando Alonso set the pace in the opening practice session of the Singapore Grand Prix, outgunning Charles Leclerc by 0.15 seconds. The two-time world champion clocked a best time of 1m31.116s on soft tyres, with Max Verstappen trailing closely behind. However, the session was marred by Alex Albon’s early exit due to a brake fire.

    Alonso’s Impressive Start

The first free practice session at the Marina Bay Circuit showcased Alonso’s skill as he consistently topped the time sheets. After initial struggles with grip on a dusty track, the Aston Martin driver marked his dominance by initially setting a time of 1m32.592s on medium tyres before progressively improving as the session unfolded.

    Competitive Times from Rivals

Leclerc led the charge for Ferrari with a time of 1m31.266s, but Alonso quickly usurped him with a blistering 1m31.117s. Max Verstappen, aiming to maintain Red Bull‘s competitive edge, finished just behind with a time that was 0.126 seconds off the leader.

    Mclaren‘s Challenges

McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri faced difficulties, with both drivers unable to breach the top spots despite significant adjustments made to their cars’ front wing angles during pit stops. Piastri reported an ‘understeery’ sensation after his initial runs, hampering their progress.

    Albon’s Brake Fire Incident

In a stark contrast to Alonso’s stellar performance, Williams driver Alex Albon was sidelined within the first ten minutes of the session due to a brake fire. The incident required prompt attention from his team, drawing a focus away from the on-track action and raising concerns regarding the reliability of the Williams car.

    Top Ten Times Overview

Alonso’s performance not only highlighted his experience but also confirmed Aston Martin’s development progress. Behind the leading trio of Alonso, Leclerc, and Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton managed a fourth-place finish despite trailing by 0.364 seconds. Isack Hadjar, in his debut outing, impressively secured seventh ahead of Carlos Sainz, who opted not to run on soft tyres.

    Conclusion

As the Singapore Grand Prix weekend continues, all eyes will be on whether Alonso can maintain his momentum and if Albon’s team can rectify the issues that plagued his session. With only a few days until qualifying, teams will aim to refine their strategies for the intricate Marina Bay Circuit.
