Almost 40 automobile clubs throw support towards FIA president Ben Sulayem

FIA President Ben Sulayem Secures Backing from Almost 40 Automobile Clubs

In a significant boost to his presidency, FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem has garnered support from 36 automobile clubs, primarily across the Americas, as he faces a potential challenge from two-time world rally champion Carlos Sainz Sr.

This backing comes as speculation mounts over Sainz’s interest in contesting the upcoming presidential election, hinting at a contentious political landscape within the FIA.

    Unwavering Support Amid Controversy

Despite a tenure marked by controversy—including the departure of key figures and contentious bans—Ben Sulayem’s leadership has been praised for steering the FIA through a challenging financial landscape. In a letter addressed to the FIA president, the automobile clubs expressed their gratitude for his “service, commitment, and vision,” highlighting the remarkable turnaround achieved under his guidance.

    Key Figures Endorse Ben Sulayem

Among the notable supporters is Fabiana Ecclestone, the FIA vice president for Sport, who echoes the sentiment of both affiliation and respect shared among club presidents. The letter collectively acknowledges the decisive actions taken by Ben Sulayem, which have been instrumental in the FIA’s evolution into a global leader in both mobility and motorsport.

    A Call for Continued Leadership

“We strongly encourage you to seek re-election at the upcoming AGA,” the letter reads, emphasizing the need for continuity in the FIA’s ambitious reforms. “Your leadership has not just been about immediate results; it has established a solid foundation for the future of the FIA.”

    Who Stands Behind Ben Sulayem?

The backing of Ben Sulayem comes from a diverse group of influential figures, including:

    • Ricardo Morales Rubio – President of the Colombia motorsport federation
    • Frank Fotia – COO of the Canadian Automobile Association
    • Carmelo Sanz de Barros – President of the Spanish motorsport federation
    • Tim Shearman – FIA Deputy President for Automobile Mobility and Tourism
    • Fabiana Ecclestone – FIA vice president for Sport – South America

    Ben Sulayem’s challenge

With nearly 40 clubs rallying behind him, Ben Sulayem now appears more prepared than ever to navigate the choppy waters of the upcoming election.

As he braces for the electoral contest, Ben Sulayem’s challenge will be to leverage this support while addressing the criticisms that have emerged during his presidency. With the election date approaching, the motorsport community will be watching closely to see how the dynamics unfold.

The stage is set for a potentially thrilling election—one that could redefine the future leadership of the FIA and its impact on global motorsport.
