Alexei Navalny ally attacked with a hammer in Lithuania
Leonid Volkov, a long-time ally of the late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, has been attacked outside his home in Lithuania.
Volkov was attacked with a hammer and tear gas while in his car in Vilnius on Tuesday night.
The alleged assailant is unknown – as well as the motive.
Police are investigating the incident, according to the Reuters news agency.
Ivan Zhdanov, a member of the Navalny team, posted pictures on social media of Volkov with a bloodied lower left leg. When asked if the attacker said anything during the incident, Zhdanov said: “Everything happened in silence.”
“Of course this is a clear political attack, there is no doubt here”.
Volkov’s wife says he had returned home from the hospital with a broken hand or arm and that he was currently unable to walk due to the hammer blows to his leg.
