‘The US should stand with us’: Afghan interpreters say they are left behind as Taliban takeover gathers pace
The i says Afghan interpreters have told i of the terror and sense of betrayal they felt as the Taliban continues to gain strength across the war-torn country.
Zaki*, 32, said he worked with US forces and the Afghan army in Kabul for four years before his contract ended in 2013. Since then, he has struggled to find work as he was deemed too risky to employ by locals. He was also shunned by some fellow Afghans for helping US soldiers.
Zaki’s parents were killed in crossfires between the Taliban and guerrilla fighters when he was five years old. Now he fears for his own life and has gone into hiding in Kabul as the Taliban gains ground, with insurgents turning their guns to cities after taking large swathes of land in mostly rural areas.
