At least five people have been killed and more than a dozen have been injured in Russian attacks across Ukraine over the last 24 hours.

The mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, said on Tuesday afternoon that at least 12 people had been injured in strikes on the Ukrainian capital since the morning, with one critically injured person dying in hospital.

Kyiv police said warehouses, a business center and a fast-food restaurant were damaged in attacks on the city, with Ukrainian media reporting that the restaurant was a McDonald’s.

In the southern city of Kherson, a 74-year-old woman was killed by a Russian drone strike, Oleksandr Prokudin, the head of the Kherson Region Military Administration, announced on Telegram.

Two men, aged 38 and 60, were also wounded in a drone attack on the Kherson region on Tuesday morning, per local authorities.

In Zaporizhzhia Oblast, the acting head of the Zaporizhzhia Oblast Military Administration, Mykhailo Semkin, said early on Tuesday that another man was killed and a woman was injured after an attack that reportedly targeted the power grid.

Two others were killed and one person was injured in strikes on Sloviansk in the eastern Donetsk Oblast, authorities said.

Moscow launched 200 drones overnight at Ukraine as it continued its attacks on the country, with 187 intercepted, Ukraine’s armed forces said.

    Russian oil refinery struck

For its part, the Ukrainian military reported attacks on Russia’s Syzran oil refinery, as well as on the Atlant Aero facility in the city of Taganrog, which reportedly specialises in the making of unmanned aerial vehicles and components.

In an operation carried out by Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces, including its deep strike units, the Syzran refinery’s primary crude oil distillation unit and tank farm were hit, the Ukrainian General Staff said.

    Ukraine launches counteroffensive

It comes as a Ukrainian unit’s commander announced that it had launched counteroffensive against Russian forces near the eastern Ukrainian city of Lyman.

The city of Lyman remains one of the few in the region of Donetsk not to have been occupied by Russian forces since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, but Russian forces have been making efforts to encircle it for months.

Military analysts say that its occupation could facilitate Russia’s advance towards taking the Ukrainian strongholds of Kramatorsk and Sloviansk.

But the commander of Ukraine’s 3rd Army Corps, Andrii Biletskyi, said in a video on Telegram that the unit had launched an “offensive operation” and that Ukrainian forces had cleared an area of around 75 sq km.
