Get you up to speed: Couple dies after becoming ‘trapped in hot tub’ | News UK

Thomasina and Patrick Tobin died in their villa jacuzzi from suspected heart attacks while on holiday in Cullera, Spain. Their two teenage children discovered their bodies, prompting a police investigation into the circumstances of their deaths.

Police are investigating the potential malfunction of the jacuzzi’s suction fittings, with hot tub industry experts examining the scene to determine the cause of the incident. The Department of Foreign Affairs is providing consular assistance to the couple’s children, who alerted neighbours to the tragedy.

The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed it is providing consular assistance to the children of Thomasina and Patrick Tobin, who died in a jacuzzi in Spain. Experts from the hot tub industry are assisting Guardia Civil in investigating the incident, focusing on the jacuzzi’s suction fittings as part of their analysis.

What remains unclear — The exact cause of the couple’s fatal heart attacks and whether electrical issues contributed to the incident remains under investigation.

A family holiday turned to horror after a couple died, with police investigations suggesting they became trapped in their villa jacuzzi.

Thomasina and Patrick Tobin both suffered fatal heart attacks while staying in Cullera, Spain.

It was previously reported that their two teenage children found their bodies in the outdoor jacuzzi on Tuesday, August 25.

It’s unclear exactly how the couple died, but the cardiac arrests are thought to have been brought on by physical exhaustion from attempting to escape the water.

‘Preliminary analyses indicate that the victims suffered cardiac arrest brought on by acute stress following physical exhaustion and the desperation of the moment,’ Valencia newspaper Las Provincias said.

The Tobins, who lived in London, died on Tuesday while on a two-week holiday in the luxury Cap Blanc area near Valencia.

It’s said their children, reportedly 14 and 16, both with additional support needs, had alerted the neighbours to call police after discovering them in the tub.

Homicide detectives were initially called in due to the marks and scratches but foul play has been ruled out.

Police are investigating the theory that a freak accident occurred in the jacuzzi, preventing the couple from being able to get out.

Hot tub industry experts joined the Guardia Civil team to examine the scene, looking into the suction fittings and their power.

Las Provincias explained: ‘According to the first investigations, the excessive suction force would have imprisoned the couple inside the bathtub, which triggered a situation of extreme anguish and desperate physical effort to free themselves from the hydraulic grip.

‘The autopsy findings almost definitively reinforce the theory of accidental entrapment. Preliminary analyses indicate that the victims suffered cardiac arrest brought on by acute stress following physical exhaustion and the desperation of the moment.’

Police have suggested the scratch marks were due to the couple attempting to free each other.

Another theory is that one parent may have suffered a heart attack after being electrocuted, due to a potential fault in the tub, with the other dying trying to save them.

Relatives are said to have flown out to Spain to support the children while the Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed it was working on the case.

A spokeswoman told the Irish Mirror: ‘The Department is aware of this case and is providing consular assistance in the case of the Irish citizen concerned.

‘As with all consular cases, the Department does not comment on the details of individual cases.’

Thomasina was from Castleblayney, daughter of Irish playwright and actor Tommy McArdle, but had lived in London for 20 years as a chartered surveyor on projects such as the Ritz and the Shard.

Patrick was initially reported to be Irish too but is actually from New Zealand. It’s unknown how long the couple had been together.
